According to sources speaking anonymously to discuss legally and politically sensitive matters, Apple is likely to cease offering encrypted storage in the U.K. as a response to this order. However, this concession falls short of fulfilling the U.K.’s demand for backdoor access to its encryption service in other countries, including the United States.
One of the individuals privy to the situation, a consultant advising the United States on encryption matters, expressed shock at the U.K. government’s request for Apple’s assistance in spying on non-British users without their governments’ knowledge.
