If you read our article about Apple publishing what Macs are compatible with the upcoming Mountain Lion update and are depressed (or pissed) that your Mac won’t be able to handle it, fear not, for there is hope.
Being in this situation myself, I started looking for ways to get myself a new(er) computer – whether it was a used one, or a new one. As we know, Macs are expensive and for those of us who are on a limited income, a brand new Mac is out of the question. Or is it?
Fortunately, their are companies (including Apple) that may help with getting you that new Mac.
Companies are now offering Recycling buy back programs. You can go to their web site (listed below) and fill out a form about your computer – what kind it is, the make, model, year, technical specs, etc. Then depending on the company, they may offer you incentives towards a new computer – such as a gift card, a check, or even a special check out code that you put in as you’re checking out with that new computer. Here’s how it usually works:
1. Go to the dealers web site.
2. Look for something like “Buy Back Program” or “Recycle Program.”
3. Fill out a form about the computer you wish to trade in.
4. The company will email you a reference code for your system (keep this safe!)
5. The company will mail you a self-addressed stamped box for your computer.
6. Pack the computer and then mail it – as soon as possible.
7. The company then gets your computer at their location.
8. Evaluates your system.
9. Cuts you a check (or a gift card) for the value of the old system.
10. You get the ‘prize’ in the mail that you can use towards a new computer.
List of organizations or companies offering buy back programs:
* EPA’s Official List
* Apple
* Best Buy Recycling
* Dell (RECONNECT)
* Earth 911
* HP (Trade-In Program)
* EcoSquid
* LG
* Office Depot
* PowerMax
Good luck!
