Report: 3rd Generation iPad incorrectly shows battery percentage when charging

10

The claim comes from the DisplayMates Presidenrt Dr. Raymond Soneira who says that during their standard tests they have done on the device.  The claim states that the iPad‘s battery indicator falsely shows that the device’s battery is fully charged.  When, in fact, the device needs to be charged an hour more.

To backup his claim, he issued this statement:

“The charge indicator on all mobile devices is based on a mathematical model of the charge rates, discharge rates, and recent discharge history of the battery. It uses this information to estimate how much running time is left. It’s actually rather difficult to do because most batteries degrade slowly as they discharge and then tend to surprise with a precipitous decline near the end.”

While the above statement is true for all devices, it is unclear whether the iPad’s battery level indicator shows an inaccurate level throughout the entire charging process or if the issue is limited to the final stages directly before the power management chip initiates a trickle charge.

We’ll continue to follow this and issue updates when necessary.
