The asteroid, discovered just after Christmas and named 2024 YR4, is believed to have a potential impact on the planet in December 2032, as reported by NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies.
When the asteroid was first detected last month, NASA had estimated a mere 1.3% probability of it hitting Earth. However, the likelihood has since increased to 2.6%.
While the overall probability may still be considered low, a 2% chance of an asteroid strike is still considered “uncommon,” as stated by Davide Farnocchia, a navigation engineer with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
“For us, getting something with a probability…like 2% is high,” he emphasized.
