Updated: Their’s now a how to video on the below on our YouTube channel.  Click here to view it.

Now that iTunes 11 is out, some previous features have been dropped, while some of them are more hidden then in previous versions.

Fortunately, Apple didn’t take out the ability to convert songs to MP3 format, as I’ve been using the feature for quite sometime.

Here’s how to get there:

  1.  First, make sure that iTunes is even set up for converting MP3 files by going to iTUNES > PREFERENCES > IMPORT SETTINGS

    2.  Click on the IMPORT SETTINGS…. Button.

  2.  From the drop down menu, choose MP3 Encoder.

  3.  Click OK twice.

Now, to encode a file to MP3, follow these steps:

  1.  If the song is in the cloud, you’ll have to download it onto your computer.

  2.  Select the song you wish to encode.

  3.  Right click (CTRL+CLICK) on the song.  A drop down menu appears.

  4.  Select CREATE MP3 VERSION.

  5.  That’s it.

  32. Here’s my problem. I received a few audio files in AAC format via whatsapp. I downloaded them to my PC by forwarding those files to my email ID. Now I am unable to convert them to mp3 or even add them to iTunes. What do I do now? Please help.

    1. Hi,
The files could be encoded in a format that iTunes cannot understand, and thereby not able to convert to another format.

The only way (that I see) to do what you want is to re-download them on to your computer and then trying the conversion again.

  33. Hi Dan
I have just recently brought an external hard drive, I converted all the songs in my iTunes library to MP3 so they would play on my TV, I then had two copies of each song in my iTunes library, that is fine I guess just delete the MPEG 4 ones? also then when I done the consolidate file thing it chose to copy across only the MP3 versions of the songs which is fine but how did it know? is there a setting? (I haven’t deleted the other copy of the songs yet) I hope this makes sense.

    1. Hi,
Yes, the above does make sense. In order for you to just copy the MP3 files over to a CD, you will have to use the Finder to manually copy all of the MP3 files over to a CD. In this case, I copied all of the MP3 files to a new temporary folder and burned the CD from that Folder.

      Hope this helps!

  34. Usually I don’t learn article on blogs, however I wish to say that this write-up very forced me to try and do it! Your writing style has been surprised me. Thanks, very nice article.

  35. I’m not that much of a online reader to
be honest but your blogs really nice, keep it up!

I’ll go ahead and bookmark your website to come back down the road. Cheers

  36. Thanks for your help with this Dan, really simple instructions, v. easy to do, worked a treat

  37. What if I have already the AAC audio file already in my i-tunes – I have already imported it, how do I create a Mp3 version – by the way – the ” create mp3 option is gone from my menu -right-click… I have itunes 11.0.1.. thanks!

  38. how do you make more than one song an mp3 file at the same time i have at last 400 songs and i dont want to have to do that one by one

    1. Highlight the first song, then go to the last song that you want to convert, and then with the mouse on the last song, press [Shift] and click the mouse button – that will highlight the song(s) that you wish to convert.

  39. Hi, i’ve just tried converting an audio book, but the message I got was that I can’t as it’s a protected file. Is there any way I can get around that? By the way, the steps above are excellent, thank you!

    1. Hi,
It depends on where you bought the Audiobook and the type of book it is. Most of the time, they (the company that produced the audiobook) has another version that would allow you to play it on multiple players. You may want to check with them.

  40. I’d followed all the steps and for it worked for me. However, I cannot tell the difference between the original and the new one: how can I set iTunes to show the formats?

    1. The available formats should automatically come up. Try doing the steps again and let me know exactly where You’re having the issue.

  41. Your wrong. After watching several videos all showing me what documented and did up above here, it does not work. I set the encoder to ‘MP3’. Then I select a song and right click. It shows that I can select/click the ‘Create MP3 version’ , so I do and WALA: it creates an MPEG4 file. Now matter how many times I tried, this is what happened. Sucks. Any thoughts? HELP!!!

    1. Did you try and redownloading and then reinstalling iTunes? I just did it the other day and it worked for me (even with iTunes 11).

  42. worked!
I still hate itunes 11. will check out applescoop on easy ways to revert to itunes10

  43. Pingback: iTunes 11
  44. Oh yeah and I just did #3 and there is only create aac version. I don’t know where you see create mp3 in the drop down menu, but it aint there.

  45. Ok, so the information for if I want to import music like from a CD from preferences is good, but the other one is “SOOOOO STUPID”. #3 From the drop down menu, choose MP3 Encoder. How is a regular person supposed to know how to get the drop down menu or even know what it is? You might need to add how to get to the drop down menu.

      1. I have no problem converting, but if you are converting 280 songs what is the easiest way to find them?

        1. Thanks for your answer. I bought it off ITunes, so it’s a protected copy, it’s a MPEG 4 file. Thanks
