CDRomDuring your “Internet Travels”, I’m sure you came across a file with the extension .ISO and were wondering 1) What it was, and 2) How you can burn it to a CD or DVD.

An ISO image is like a ZIP file but it usually contains files to install an operating system or other applications.  Downloading this file is easy enough, but what if you want to burn it to a CD or DVD in order to install it on another computer?  Fortunately, Macs make it easy to, as Macs come with a utility called Disk Utility.

You must first have to find and then download an .ISO file.  For this example, I am going to burn a file called example.iso  and save it to the Desktop for easy access later.

To get to Disk Utility, go to FINDER > APPLICATIONS > UTILITIES > DISK UTILITY and then double  click the icon.

Insert a blank CD or DVD in to your Superdrive.  Wait a minute or two until it shows on your desktop.  When it does, it should also show in the Disk Utility app.  If not, quit Disk Utility and re-active it.

Here’s what to do now:

1.  From the File Menu, choose OPEN DISK IMAGE and select the image to be burned.
2.  Click the BURN button and follow the instructions.

That’s it.
