Every once in a while, your Mac may not boot into the operating system for one reason or another. This article will show you how to boot into safe mode for troubleshooting problems, new installed apps, or drivers.

There are two different ways to boot into Safe Mode, and that depends on the type of processor your Mac has: Intel or Apple Silicon.  I’ll go over both ways.

Booting with an Intel chip:

  1. Start your Mac. If it’s already on, restart it.
  2. Press and hold down the Shift key while your Mac powers on.
  3. The Apple logo should appear. When the login window appears, release the Shift key and log in.
  4. That’s it.

Booting with the Apple Silicon chip:

  1. Press and hold the Power button until you see the startup options appear.
  2. Choose your startup disk.
  3. Press and hold the Shift key and click Continue in Safe Mode.
  4. Release the Shift key.
  5. That’s it.

How do I get out of Safe Mode?

When you’re done with safe mode and want to return your Mac, simply restart it and power it on again as you normally would. Your Mac should boot up normally.
