There are several ways to do this (iTunes on a Mac or PC is one option), plugging in your device and have it automatically backup when on WiFi at various times, but we’ll focus on backing up to iCloud.
When you first activate an iOS device you not only have the option to sign up with iCloud, but to also backup the device during the set-up process. If you didn’t do it during this time you can sign up anytime. I’ll assume that you’ve already signed up.
To initialize a backup, do the following:
- Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud.
- Scroll down until you see iCloud Backup.
- Make sure iCloud Backup is enabled.
- Select the Back Up Now option.
- Please stay in the screen until the update has completed.
Now you’re ready to upgrade to iOS 12.
