Apple, the largest technology company in the world, launched the iPhone 5 with iOS 6 operating system this year. More than 5 million people worldwide purchased the iPhone 5 within the first 3 days of its launch. The demand exceeded supply and the initial supply was soon sold out. People had to wait until the new supply arrived before they could enjoy what became the hottest mobile of the year.

Overview

The iPhone 5 is the best mobile phone from Apple at the moment. (Apple does still sell the previous 4S model as a new phone.) It is the upgraded version of the iPhone 4s. The upgrades include refinement in hardware, newer and faster operating system, improved existing features and the introduction of some new features. The iPhone 5 is looks slim and stunningly impressive in its redesigned make over. It is taller and lighter than its predecessor the iPhone 4s. It weighs just 112gm with 7.6 mm thickness.

Display

The iPhone 5 offers a larger display, faster processor and 4G connectivity. The bigger screen with retina display offers extra room for an extra row of icons on iPhone 5’s home screen. Resolution of the screen is also increased to 640×1136 pixels. The larger screen and increased resolution improves the experience of watching film or videos. The longer and brighter screen is extremely convenient to check and reply to email, write notes, browse the web or use apps.

Applications

The new processor offers incredible speed and ease in swiping menus, loading apps and responding to social networks.

Many apps are improved from their previous versions. Now by signing in to Facebook from your mobile phone, you can add your Facebook friends to your phone contacts. You can add their birthdays into your phone calendar and upload photos directly to social networking sites.

Apple has tied up with Yelp in the UK to provide business listings for Siri. Now you can ask the robot about nearest pubs, restaurants and read their reviews also. Apple has designed its own mapping services, which is offered on iPhone 5 instead of Google maps.

Making Calls

Call quality has significantly improved because of the in-built microphones at the front, bottom and back of the phone. The iPhone 5 supports HD voice. If your carrier supports this feature, you can get excellent call quality. FaceTime is Apple’s own video calling services. Now it is available on 3G. As a result, you can receive FaceTime video calls using 3G connectivity. You need not be connected to Wi-Fi signals.

Gaming

The powerful and fast processor has improved the gaming experience. Now you can enjoy single player or multi-player games with superb speed and instant connection. Gaming on iOS is considerably better than on Android because game designers can sell their products for a fair fee through the iTunes store

Camera

The 8MP camera with some tweaks performs better than that of the iPhone 4s. It offers good quality pictures with vibrant colours and better video stabilisation. A new feature introduced was panorama mode where 360 degree image is possible in portrait mode.

Battery

With all these features the battery can last roughly a day. You can get 8 hours of 3G talk time or 5 to 8 hours of 3G or 4G browsing time. You can watch 10 hours of movies on Juice or listen to music for the same amount of time.

The Apple iPhone 5 is a high quality smartphone suitable for high end users. Vodafone offers it for £149 with £33 monthly tariff charges. Or you can spend £500 sim free for the 16GB model or nearly £600 for the 32GB model. Besides at present only EE offer 4G connectivity.

In the UK, the iPhone 5 will not be compatible with upcoming 4g connectivity offered by O2 or Vodafone. However, you can upgrade iPhone 4s to latest operating system and avail the benefits of improved features. Apple iPhone contracts start from as low as £20 per month.
