Now the company has brought the popular game back from the dead, and put it on iOS and renamed it Dr. Mario World.  For those of us who played the original, how does it compare to today’s game?

Original Dr. Mario game on Nintendo’s Game Boy.

Overview:

The purpose of this Tetris-like game is simple.  Mario has become a doctor because a virus has infected virtually all of the world’s residence.

The Game’s Purpose:

Your job, is to help Mario kill as many viruses as you can with the meds that Mario has given you.  The more viruses you kill, the more levels you’ll go.

Pros:

  • It’s FREE.
  • Easy to play.
  • Easy to understand.
  • Fast Paced.
  • Great Graphics.
  • Game can give 1 or 2 free “pills” when player completes a level.

Cons:

  • In-app Purchasing.
  • Long “how to play” mode.
  • Doesn’t auto-save unless you sign in to Nintendo’s Dr. Mario World web site.
  • Can only play in portrait mode on iPad.
  • Can get irritating at the beginning of each level.
  • Limited number of “pills” until player purchases more (in-app purchasing).
  • Can make the device warm if played for a long period of Time.

Bottom line:

This game has the potential to become a popular game on the App Store if Nintendo would fix most of the cons that’s outlined above.
