After weeks of speculation, the Apple event invites have been passed down to the press, and it looks like the tea leaves were right: the company will be announcing something on September 10. Based on the company’s past behavior (and on the invite itself), it’s all but certain that the company will be launching at least one new iPhone and the much-anticipated, redesigned iOS 7.

Apple’s invites normally include subtle (or not-so-subtle) hints about what is coming, and this one is no exception. The invite depicts an Apple logo set against a background of multicolored dots, which based on the last few weeks of leaks and speculation could be a hint at the much-rumored colorful “low-cost iPhone” that will supposedly launch alongside the new flagship. The current consensus (to the degree that there is one) points to a faster “iPhone 5S” that includes a new A7 chip and a fingerprint sensor but is outwardly similar to the iPhone 5, as well as an “iPhone 5C” that puts iPhone 5-like guts into a new, brightly colored plastic shell. The so-called 5C will supposedly be offered as Apple’s “low-end” iPhone, replacing the company’s current strategy of offering flagships from past years at a lower price. Of course, none of this is true until Apple says it is, but most of this speculation seems within the realm of plausibility.

Naturally, folks are waiting with bated breath for new iPhones announcement, but there’s a long list of other things that the company could enlighten the masses on. We’re just about due for new iPads and Retina MacBook Pros, and we expect that we could hear about a release date for OS X 10.9(codenamed Mavericks) as well. We’re also waiting for a more specific launch date for the Mac Pro, which last we heard was launching on some non-specific date in the fall. Apple could announce any or all of these things, but it may also let the iPhone and iOS 7 take center stage for now. Last year the company held a separate event in October to launch new iPads and a handful of new Macs, and it could do the same this year.
