Sony shutting down PlayStation Vue

Over four years ago, we made a bold decision to change the rules and revolutionize the traditional TV-viewing experience in the U.S. with PlayStation Vue. We set the bar high and sought to innovate an established industry by delivering a modern TV experience. By completely rethinking live and on demand television, we offered an incredible user experience that allowed viewers to discover and watch content in completely new ways.

Today we are announcing that we will shut down the PlayStation Vue service on January 30, 2020. Unfortunately, the highly competitive Pay TV industry, with expensive content and network deals, has been slower to change than we expected. Because of this, we have decided to remain focused on our core gaming business.

PlayStation fans can continue to access movie and TV content through the PlayStation Store on PS4 and via our partnerships with top entertainment apps. With 100 million PlayStation 4s in the market today, our community continues to grow and thrive. We will continue to deliver the best entertainment experiences across the network, along with other key gaming services, including PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus.

We are very proud of what PlayStation Vue was able to accomplish. We had ambitious goals for how our service could change how people watch TV, showcasing PlayStation’s ability to innovate in a brand-new category within the Pay TV industry. We want to thank all of our customers, some of whom have been with us since PlayStation Vue’s launch in 2015.

We appreciate your continued support as we move through this transitional period and look toward the future.

Sony Playstation 4 sales rise to 53.4 million after the holidays

Sony announced that it has sold 6.2 million units adding up to close 53.4 million in sales of its Playstation 4 game systems after the holiday rush has come and gone.

(CNBC): The figure, calculated between 20 November and January 1, marks an almost 9 percent rise from the 5.7 million units it sold in roughly the same period a year ago. The last figures Sony gave were on December 7 when it said it had exceeded 50 million PS4 sales. It's important to note that this was during the holiday period so included some of the sales that had happened.

PlayStation 4 software sales during the 2016 holiday period reached more than 50.4 million copies globally through digital downloads of games or those sold in retail stores.

"We will aim to continue the momentum this year by broadening the PS4 title portfolio, further enriching the revolutionary gaming experiences on PlayStation VR and high quality gaming experience on PlayStation4 Pro*6, while also expanding network services," Andrew House, global chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment, the company's gaming business, said in a press release on Thursday.

The PS4 console, released in November 2013, has become an increasingly important device for Sony as it struggles to grow in other areas such as smartphones. Gaming is one of its strongest businesses and the PS4 currently leads offerings from rivals Nintendo and Microsoft in terms of sales.

Sony is keen to keep momentum strong with its PS4 and last year released a slimmed-down version of the console as well as the PS4 Pro, a more powerful model. Sony also unveiled the PlayStation VR – a virtual reality headset that is compatible with the PS4. The Japanese electronics giant has not given any sales figures for the device, but Jim Ryan, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe told CNBC in October that it could sell "hundreds of thousands".

But Sony will face heightened competition in the coming year with Nintendo's latest console, Switch coming out in March, and Microsoft'snext Xbox slated for release later this year.

Sony intros Playstation 4 Pro

On Wednesday, Sony introduced a new game console to its Playstation lineup - The Playstation 4 Pro.

The game console will be able to play on ultra-high 4K and HDR television screens, making some new 4K games pop.

"It's for the hardcore gamer -- or the one who's invested in a high-definition [display],"
PS4 Pro creator Mark Cerny told attendees during a press event in New York City.

The console will feature a 1TB hard drive, advanced graphics and a faster processor, but more detailed specs were not unveiled. The PS4 console will also pair with the PlayStation virtual reality headset set to arrive in October.

The regular PS4 is also getting an upgrade. The new design will be lighter, slimmer and more powerful. It will cost $299.00.

Sony also announced existing PS4 consoles will get HDR compatibility, starting next week, via a firmware update.

The console will cost $399.00 and be available sometime in November.

Sony: "Macs will be able to stream Playstation 4 games over WiFi soon"

SonyPS4Early Tuesday, Sony announced that PS4 customers will be able to stream its games over a WiFi connection using either a Mac or Windows computer.

The option is coming with the PS4's next major software update, v3.50, Sony said. While that update is going into public beta testing on Wednesday, gamers will have to wait for the finished version of the software to try the extended Remote Play. Currently there is no official release date.

The technology currently streams games over Wi-Fi to a handful of Sony-made devices, including the PlayStation Vita, the PlayStation TV, and Xperia phones. Adding non-Sony platforms should significantly improve access.

Sony's chief rival in the console space, Microsoft, has allowed gamers to stream Xbox One titles to a Windows PC since the release of Windows 10 last year.

Some other planned upgrades in the PS4 update include friend login notifications, the ability to appear offline, and easier multiplayer with friends thanks to scheduled events and the display of what each member of a party is playing.
