Channel 2 Consumer Advisor Clark Howard says the in-home technology could impact your privacy.

The assistants work by listening for the “wake word.” For Echo, that word is “Alexa,” for Google Home it’s “OK Google” and for Siri it’s “Hey Siri.”

After it detects the wake word it begins recording the interaction.  As those recordings build up the device becomes more efficient, but with that convenience comes constant monitoring.

What these devices record, accidental or otherwise, is what prompted an attorney in Arkansas to request a search warrant for the recordings on the echo of an accused murderer.

Their response, plus what you need to know about when your device is listening and how to stop it, on Channel 2 Action News Monday at 5 p.m.
