Apple’s revolutionary safety service, Emergency SOS via satellite, is now available to iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 users in Japan.

This innovative technology allows users to send messages to emergency services even when they’re outside of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.

Additionally, users can now share their location with friends and family while traveling off the grid by opening the Find My app and selecting “Share My Location via Satellite.”

Every model in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 lineup can connect directly to a satellite through a combination of custom-designed components and deeply integrated software. Emergency SOS via satellite builds on existing iPhone features like Emergency SOS, Medical ID, emergency contacts, and Find My location sharing, providing users with a more comprehensive approach to sharing critical information with emergency services, family, and friends.

This groundbreaking service enhances the capabilities of Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) — or emergency services call centers — by enabling them to connect with even more users in emergency situations. It doesn’t require any additional software or protocols to set up, and users are directly connected to emergency services equipped to receive text messages or to relay centers with Apple-trained emergency specialists who can contact PSAPs that may not be able to receive text messages on the user’s behalf.
