On March 14, 2025, the GSMA, a global association representing mobile network operators, officially unveiled RCS Universal Profile 3.0, the latest iteration of the Rich Communication Services standard. Initially, it might appear as a mere technical update, another incremental step in the realm of messaging protocols that most people would overlook. However, upon closer examination, it becomes evident that this one holds significant potential. After years of fragmented messaging experiences, RCS 3.0 promises to finally bridge the gap between Android and iOS users, providing secure, interoperable, and end-to-end encrypted communication across platforms—a long-awaited solution.

When Apple incorporated RCS support into iOS 18, it utilized an older version of the protocol. Consequently, chat messages between iPhone and Android users remained unencrypted. Fortunately, Apple has already committed to updating to the latest RCS protocol, effectively resolving the issue.

Google also confirmed its support for the new standard, marking the first time both Apple and Google have done so simultaneously. Google stated its intention to expedite the inclusion of RCS with Android.

It’s important to note that you’ll need to use the appropriate messaging apps to take advantage of RCS. In this case, it would be Apple iMessage and Google Messages. Third-party texting apps currently lack RCS support, although this may change in the future.
