An open letter to Microsoft – Why does Windows suck?

For those of us who are old enough to remember, when Windows 3.1 came out, it was a state of the art operating system.  Who would have thought one could operate a computer with tiny icons and a revolutionary device called a mouse.  The operating system was built on top of another operating system called DOS (or MSDOS when it came to Windows).

Also, in those days, one did not have the Internet.  One called other computers with a standard modem, and went on to a service called a BBS (Bulletin Board System).

Then came the Unix/Linux operating systems.  Those operating systems showed that a computer could be a reliable tool for businesses and mission critical situations.

While the computer industry evolved, Microsoft and Windows did not.  Sure, they updated the operating system with Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, and then came Vista and finally Windows 7.  All operating systems have one major flaw on them….The underline operating system is still in the mid to late 1980’s.  Although they (Microsoft)  have tried to update DOS, they haven’t done a very good job of it.  Windows still uses files such as AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS which could be easily highjacked with today’s technology without even having a science degree in computers.  Hell, my friend’s six year old could bring Windows down without even knowing a lot about computers.

So, what does Microsoft need to do to get out of the dark ages?  Get rid of DOS, admit defeat, embrace Linux, and redo Windows on a Linux platform.  That’s what Steve Jobs did when he became Interm CEO of Apple.

Another thing the company has to do, change the way of thinking.  By that I mean, stop hiring salespeople and start hiring real innovators.  This is why Apple has been so successful in the computer field.

One more thing they need to do, get rid of Ballmer.  Not because he is not capable of running Microsoft, but he is also stuck in the mid 1980s.  He has no forward vision, doesn’t like to take risks, and is an all around idiot.  There, someone finally said it.
