How to update Mac Software from the Terminal | CompuScoop.com

Sure, there is an easy way to update MacOS by going to     > System Preferences > Software update.  But what if you wanted to do it via the Terminal?

Here’s what to do:

  1. Open a Terminal Window (Finder > Utilities > Terminal).
  2. At the command prompt, type: softwareupdate -l
  3. The command will check for any update(s) and download & install them.
  4. That’s it.

Bonus Tip:

To find out what other commands you can do, type: softwareupdate

To close the Terminal Window correctly, type: exit
