Developers: How to prep for Apple’s upcoming Vision Pro

With the Apple Vision Pro set to be released sometime in early 2024, we as developers aught to be preparing our new or current apps to be compatible with the new hardware so we can be at the forefront on launch day.

Here's a mini-checklist of what you need to test, run, and be ready for launch day:

  1. An Apple Developer Account ($100.00/Year).
  2. Login to developer.apple.com and read the documentation.
  3. Download the BETA version of Xcode that includes the Vision Pro SDK.
  4. Install Xcode.
  5. Once downloaded and installed, load a project that you wish to be compatible with Vision Pro.
  6. Run, test, and then run again!
  7. That's it.

Happy coding!

How to set the Finder Default Folder

The Finder is a go to window for most Mac users. It contains the most important areas on your Mac, such as Applications, Documents, Music, Pictures, and so on.

Opening the Finder will take you to a default folder, such as Applications. But what if you want a different folder to show?

Here's how to change it:

  1. Open Finder.
  2. In the upper-left corner, click Finder > Settings.
  3. This will open a tiny window on the Desktop.
  4. Search for a drop-down window that says "Finder window will show".
  5. Select the Folder you wish to show when you open Finder.
  6. That's it.

How to, and what is Launchpad on Mac?

You may have noticed a multicolored, squared icon on your Dock and maybe wondering what the heck it is.

That icon on the Dock is called Launchpad.

What is it?

According to Apple: "Launchpad on your Mac is a central location where you can view all of your apps and easily open them."

How do you use Launchpad?

Open and close Launchpad

  • Open Launchpad: Click the Launchpad icon in the Dock (or use the Control Strip).
  • Close Launchpad without opening an app: Click anywhere (except on an app) or press Esc.

Find and open apps in Launchpad

  • Find an app: Type its name in the search field at the top of Launchpad. Or look on another page in Launchpad—swipe left or right on the trackpad or press Command-Left Arrow or Command-Right Arrow.

Games you download from the App Store are added to the Games folder in Launchpad. If you’re using a game controller that supports it, you can access and navigate the Games folder using your controller. For more information about using game controllers with your Mac, see the Apple Support article Connect a wireless game controller to your Apple device.

  • Open an app: Click it.

During downtime, or if you reach the time limit set for apps in Screen Time settings, app icons are dimmed and an hourglass icon is shown. See Manage downtime in Screen Time.

Organize apps in Launchpad

  • Move an app on a page: Drag an app to a new location on the same page.
  • Move an app to another page: Drag the app to the edge of the screen, then release it when the page you want appears.
  • Create an app folder: Drag an app over another app.
  • Rename a folder: Click the folder to open it, click its name, then enter a new name.
  • Add an app to a folder: Drag the app over the folder.
  • Remove an app from a folder: Drag the app out of the folder.

Add apps to Launchpad

Apps that you download from the App Store automatically appear in Launchpad.

To add an app that you didn’t download from the App Store, drag the app to the Applications folder in the Finder on your Mac. The app is then shown in Launchpad.

Remove apps from Launchpad

  1. In Launchpad, click and hold an app until all the apps begin to jiggle.
  2. Click the app’s Delete button .

If a Delete button isn’t shown, the app can’t be removed from Launchpad. See Install and uninstall apps from the internet or a disc.

Apple TV+ 2023 viewership up 42% year over year

The December 15 premiere of the Mark Wahlberg-starrer The Family Plan on Apple TV+ debuted as the most viewed movie ever for the service, and now stands as the most viewed movie in Apple TV+ history, per insiders.

The Jennifer Aniston–Reese Witherspoon The Morning Show is the service’s series record holder after its new season that began in September saw audience increases by 20% over its second season, powered by growth in the U.S., and Canada, Australia, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, France and India.

The combination of those, Brie Larson’s Lessons in Chemistry, Messi Meets America, Gary Oldman’s Slow Horses, Ron Moore’s For All Mankind, along with this year’s Rebecca Ferguson-starrer Silo, Idris Elba’s Hijack, Sharon Horgan’s Bad Sisters and Jason Sudeikis’ Ted Lasso, put Apple TV+’s viewership up by 42% year over year in 2023, in over 100 countries. The service doubled the total hours consumed, in year over year comparison.

Apple’s Monsterverse series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters from Legendary Entertainment, premiered as the No. 1 first season drama on Apple TV, in November, and Lessons in Chemistry became the #1 limited series on Apple TV+ to date, following its October 13 debut. The Lionel Messi docu Messi in America is on course to net the distinction of becoming the biggest unscripted sport series for the service after premiering October 11…
