How to use this hidden iPhone feature – Identify Landmarks in Photos

I was looking for an article to write, and I came across this neat trick that involves the Photos app and your photos - how to use an iPhone to identify landmarks in photos.  The feature is called Visual Lookup.

In order for the below to work, you must have iOS 15 or newer installed, as well as an iPhone with the A12 Bionic chip or later.  The feature does have some language problems, and can only work with the below:

  • English (Australia, Canada, India, Singapore, UK, US)
  • French (France)
  • German (Germany)
  • Italian (Italy)
  • Spanish (Mexico, Spain, U.S.)

If your iPhone qualifies, then read on!

The Visual Lookup works with the Photos app.

  1. Open the Photos app.
  2. Tap an image containing a Landmark.
  3. Look for an "i" at the bottom of the photo.
  4. If it has a star in the left corner, Visual Lookup is available for the image.
  5. Tap "i" again for more information, or swipe UP on the photo.
  6. For even more information, tap the icon under the landmark photo.
  7. Siri will be invoked for further information about the Landmark.
  8. That's it.

Identifying landmarks can be extremely useful when you're on a trip or just to find out what the Landmark is about.

How to always show Scroll Bars on Mac

Scroll Bars appear on the right side of a window and help a user scroll a page up or down.  The default setting for Mac is to have these disappear until a user hovers over the area where they would appear for them to show up.

If you're like me and want them to be shown all the time, here's what to do.

  1. Go to the  Apple menu and choose “System Settings”.
  2. Go to “Appearance”.
  3. Look for ‘Show Scroll Bars’ and choose the toggle next to “Always”.
  4. That's it.

This setting is for all app windows on Mac.

Apple officially shuts down the Dark Sky weather app

As of January 1st, 2023, iOS users can no longer download and use the stand alone weather app Dark Sky, as Apple has officially removed the app's access to it.  The Dark Sky features can now only be used in Apple's Weather app, which is included on all new Macs and iOS devices running iOS 16.

Apple acquired Dark Sky in March 2020 and it has since incorporated many of the app's features into the preinstalled Weather app on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Earlier this month, Apple shared a support document with information on how Dark Sky users can use the Weather app, which now offers "hyperlocal" forecasts, including next-hour precipitation, hourly forecasts for the next 10 days, high-resolution radar maps, and severe weather notifications.
