Paramount Plus: ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Series Officially Announced

Web site Trek Movie has gotten word that CBS/Paramount Plus has officially announced a new Star Trek series named Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' is in development.

Today Paramount+ made the long running rumors official, announcing a series order for the brand new Star Trek show: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The series will “follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy.” The show will go into production in 2024.

Netflix’s Cheapest Plan now available for Apple TV

Months after its launch, Netflix's ad-supported plan has finally made it to the Apple TV with limited quality and streaming.

The company launched the streaming tier in November for consoles, Chromecast, iOS, Amazon Fire, and various smart televisions. It didn't initially support tvOS but now the plan is available in the latest version of the Netflix Apple TV app.

The "Basic with Ads" subscription plan costs $6.99 and has some limitations. For example, on average, Netflix says that viewers can expect to see about four minutes of ads per hour, which may differ based on the TV show or movie.

Content is also limited to 720p quality, which stands out from the 1080p and 4K offerings from other services on Apple TV. Basic with Ads only allows one stream per account, and users can't download content for offline viewing.

Apple releases iTunes 12.12.8 for Windows

On Thursday, Apple released an iTunes 12.12.8 update for Windows, with the software introducing security improvements and "support for new devices." This is the first update to iTunes since iTunes 12.12.7, which came out in December 2022.

iTunes for Windows can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store or from Apple's website.

Apple notifies developers about new requirement for submitting apps

On Tuesday evening, Apple sent an email to all registered developers notifying them about a new requirement for submitting new or updating tvOS apps to the App Store using Xcode 14.1.

The email states:

We’re reaching out to let you know that, starting July 31, 2023, new tvOS apps and app updates submitted to the App Store must be built with Xcode 14.1 and the tvOS 16.1 SDK or later. The latest version of Xcode 14, which includes the latest tvOS SDK, is available for free on the Mac App Store.

When building your app, we highly recommend taking advantage of the latest advances in the tvOS 16 SDK, which include:

Cross-device connectivity. Integrate your tvOS app with your iOS, iPadOS, or watchOS apps to unlock new experiences on Apple TV. For example, you can deliver more personalized workouts on Apple TV based on motion sensor data from Apple Watch, display real-time information on iPhone while media plays in your app on Apple TV, or include more screens for gameplay.

Multiuser support. Make it easier for people to enjoy your tvOS app with improved system integration for user profiles. With credentials stored in a shared keychain, users won’t need to sign in and choose their profile every time they launch your app.

SwiftUI for tvOS. Customize your app’s interface and provide even more functionality with SwiftUI, the modern way to build user interfaces across all Apple platforms. Create custom button styles and effects that accent your design, take advantage of standard gestures such as Tap and Touch, and add consistency to interactions with the Focus APIs.
