iOS: How to Set up Assistive Access on iPhone

The other day, my 90 year old dad was having trouble using his iPhone.  There were too many icons on the screen, and he gets easily confused when he sees a bunch of items on the screen.

About a year ago, I read an article about Apple coming out with an easier way to use the iPhone by limiting the amount of icons on the screen, and enlarging them so that persons with visual impairments can use the iPhone easier and with less icons.

Then I came across a notice that Apple had implemented the Assistive Access in iOS 17.  I decided to try it with my dad.  He loves it.

Here's how to set it up:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Assistive Access.
  2. Select Set up Assistive Access.
  3. Read the information and then tap Continue.
  4. Verify your Apple ID and Password.
  5. Choose the layout of the screen you'd like to have (Rows or Grids).
  6. Choose which app(s) you'd like to appear on the screen.
  7. Verify the device's passcode.  You'll need to come up with one to secure access to this section.
  8. This passcode is different then the one you use for the actual device.
  9. Read the information on how to exit Assistive Access incase you ever need too.
  10. Start Assistive Access by tapping the "Start using Assistive Access" button.
  11. The iPhone will reset and go into that mode.
  12. That's it.

Here's how to disable it:

  • Triple click the right-side button (press it 3 times).
  • The device will reset and go into the normal home screen.
  • That's it.

iOS and Mac: How to set up an account recovery contact

Editor's Note: This tip comes directly from Apple's Support document and may contain additional information. You can see it here.

What IS an account recovery contact?

An account recovery contact is someone who can verify your identity and help you regain access to your account and all of your data if you ever get locked out.

Setting up a recovery contact isn’t required, but it can make regaining access to your account and data easier.

Who should be your recovery contact?

Your recovery contact should be a person that you know and trust, such as a family member or a close friend. You can choose one of your contacts, or if you're in a Family Sharing group, the members of the group will be recommended. You can select up to five recovery contacts for your account. To protect your privacy, Apple doesn't know who your recovery contacts are, so it’s important for you to remember them.

What does your recovery contact need?

Your contacts will need an iOS device with iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 or later, or Mac with macOS Monterey or later, and must meet the minimum requirements. Your recovery contacts won't have any access to your account, only the ability to give you a code if you need one.

Requirements for setting up a recovery contact

  • All of your devices must be running iOS 15, iPadOS 15, watchOS 8 or macOS Monterey or later. You may be prompted to update any devices not running the latest OS, or remove any devices that you aren't using.
  • You must be over the age of 13.
  • You need two-factor authentication turned on for your Apple ID.

On your iPhone with iOS 15 or later

  1. Go to Settings, then tap your name.
  2. Tap Sign-In & Security, then tap Account Recovery.
  3. Tap Add Recovery Contact, then tap again and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID.
  4. If you're in a Family Sharing group, the members of the group are recommended. Or you can click Choose Someone Else to choose one of your contacts.
  5. If you select a family member, they'll be added automatically. If you select a contact, they'll need to accept the request. You'll also send them a message to let them know that you'd like to add them as your recovery contact.
  6. After they’ve accepted your request, you will see a message that they have been added as your account recovery contact.
  7. That's it.

If your friend or family member declines or removes themselves as your recovery contact, you will see a notification and will need to select a new account recovery contact.

iOS: How to add a website to the Home Screen on iPhone or iPad

If you have a website that you always login to, you can save it to an iPhone or iPad Home Screen for quick login.  The website becomes its own icon and looks like a normal iOS app.

Here's how:

  1. Activate the iOS device.
  2. Open Safari.
  3. Go to the web site you wish to quickly login too.
  4. Tap the share icon (see image that's included with this article).
  5. Scroll down until you find "Add to Home Screen".
  6. A window will open with the site's title and URL.
  7. Click ADD.
  8. The web site now appears on the Home Screen.
  9. Tap it to quickly go to that web site.
  10. That's it.
