Windows 8.1 users receiving end of life notice

Reports are coming in that Windows 8 users are getting a blue screen of death notice that the operating system will reach End Of Life status on January 10th, 2023.  This means that Microsoft will no longer issue any security updates or customer support on and after this date.  This also means that Windows Defender, as well as any 3rd party anti-virus software will no longer provide updates for this operating system.

Most Windows 8 machines can be upgraded to Windows 10, and some can even take advantage of the free upgrade to Windows 10.  But that would depend on the make and model of your machine.

CBC Planning Fall Launch of 24/7/365 Ad Supported Streaming News Channel

The Canadian public broadcaster’s 24/7 free ad supported streaming channel will be anchored by its flagship news program, `The National’.

OTTAWA, Canada—As part of a new strategic plan to better serve audiences across Canada on both television and digital platforms, CBC News has announced plans to launch a new free ad supported streaming channel in the fall.

“The world of news media, TV and video journalism is changing rapidly. Yet the demand for trusted, quality journalism is unchanged. To reach audiences in new ways, we are making a strategic push into the world of streaming news with the launch of a FAST channel, while continuing to broaden and deepen the storytelling on our flagship program, `The National,'" said Susan Marjetti, general manager of news, current affairs and local, CBC.

The new free 24/7 ad-supported streaming (FAST) news channel for streaming, digital and connected TV platforms, will offer the best of CBC local, national and current affairs journalism, the Canadian public broadcaster said.

The new channel will complement the CBC News Network, which will continue to serve as Canada’s live and breaking subscription news channel on cable, satellite and CBC Gem.

Netflix picks Microsoft as partner for ad supported streaming service

Netflix has stunned the streaming and tech world by choosing to partner with Microsoft for a new ad supported pricing plan for its streaming service.

The plan (to be announced sometime soon) is going to be offered along with its other plans as an option for subscribers, as the streaming service sees a massive exit from its platform over the last several months.  The company hopes that the new offering will help its departing revenue slow as the company is loosing money rapidly.

Netflix's Chief Operating Officer Greg Peters addressed the decision to work with Microsoft in a short blog post on Wednesday.

“Microsoft has the proven ability to support all our advertising needs as we work together to build a new ad-supported offering,” he wrote.

No word on when this offering will be available.
