Apple in 2022: Company to Debut Port-Free iPhone

The big iPhone news is likely to be a major redesign to the flagship iPhones in autumn 2022, and part of that redesign just might finally be the elimination of the Lightning port. Expect Apple to usher in the port-free iPhone in 2022.

If Apple hasn’t made the move to USB-C on flagship iPhones already, I don’t think it’s going to. 2020’s redesign would have been the time to do it.

That’s because I believe (and I have no inside knowledge—this is just my instinct based on covering Apple for the past few years) that Apple hasn’t moved from Lightning to USB-C because it’s going to skip USB-C altogether and go straight to a port-free, wirelessly charging iPhone.

Otherwise, expect a continued emphasis on big screens and better cameras—two of the three big things (alongside battery life) consumers most often say they want when polled about their smartphone preferences.

MacOS: How to Test Network Quality in macOS Monterey

Have you ever noticed that your network is slower than normal? Now with macOS Monterey, you can test the quality (i.e. upload and download speeds) right from the Terminal.

Here's how:

Open a Terminal window.
Type: networkquality.
After a few seconds, it'll show you something like the example below.

Deal Reached between Disney and YouTube TV

Early Sunday evening, YouTubeTV sent an email to subscribers announcing that a deal HAS BEEN REACHED between the Streaming Service and Disney, which owns ABC, NatGeo, and others.

Below is the email:

We’re happy to share that we’ve reached a deal with Disney to return their content to YouTube TV while preserving a $64.99/mo. price for our members. We’ve already started to restore access to Disney networks like ESPN and FX, including their live and on-demand content, as well as any recordings that were previously in your Library. We will also be turning on your local ABC stations over the course of the day. Don’t worry, your personal preferences and recommendations will be just as you left them.

‌As we promised a $15 discount while the Disney content remained off platform, we will still honor a one-time credit for all impacted Base Plan members.

‌For active members who have not yet received that $15 discount on their monthly bill, you will automatically receive this one-time credit on your next bill with no action needed. Note that your bill in Settings will not reflect this credit until you have been charged. Members who are in a paused state will receive this credit one month after their first charge. Verizon-billed users will automatically receive this as a one-time discount of $15 on their next bill. After that, the monthly price will revert back to $64.99 for new and existing members.

‌For any of you who were impacted and have initiated the cancellation process, we will still honor the one-time $15 credit on your bill if you resume your membership before you lose access. Visit tv.youtube.com/membership and click ‘Add’ to return the Base Plan to your membership. Note, you will still see a $64.99 price upon re-activating your membership, but a one-time discount will be reflected in your next bill.

Disney+ adds SharePlay for iOS

Wednesday’s new Disney+ app update includes added support for Apple’s SharePlay so subscribers with an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV will have another way to come together with personal friends and family both near and far by viewing Disney+ content completely in sync while on a FaceTime call.

The Disney+ SharePlay experience is available globally across the entire Disney+ content catalog (content availability varies by region) from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and more, including new titles like Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye, Welcome to Earth, and upcoming Disney+ premieres like Encanto (Dec. 24) and The Book of Boba Fett (Dec. 29).

“We’re very excited to launch SharePlay on Disney+ for Apple users in time for the holidays and ahead of several highly-anticipated premieres,” said Jerrell Jimerson, EVP of Product & Design, Disney Streaming, in a statement. “With thousands of movies and shows and a growing content catalog of new titles and originals, SharePlay provides another opportunity for personal friends and family around the world to come together and create new memories with their favorite stories on Disney+.”

SharePlay sessions can host up to 32 people and offer each participant in the FaceTime call the flexibility of choosing audio and subtitles in the language of their choice. Viewers who prefer a bigger screen can also enjoy the synchronized content on their Apple TV while still sharing the moment with personal friends and family over FaceTime through their iPhone or iPad.
