Apple TV+ series ‘Shantaram’ to star Alexander Siddig and Charlie Hunnam

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Game of Thrones alum Alexander Siddig will star opposite Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) in Apple’s international drama series Shantaram, based on Gregory David Roberts’ bestselling novel, Deadline reports.

Shot across two continents, Shantaram tells the story of Lin (Hunnam), a man on the run from an Australian prison looking to get lost in the teeming city of Bombay. Cut off from family and friends by distance and fate, he finds a new life in the slums, bars and underworld of India.

Siddig will play the series-regular role of Khader Khan, the revered kingpin of Bombay’s underworld who acts as a surrogate father to Lin.

The series, which shot two episodes before pausing filming in late-February 2020, is gearing up for to restart production in May on the remaining 10 episodes.

Apple Book’s publisher’s description:

It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured.

So begins this epic, mesmerizing first novel by Gregory David Roberts, set in the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Shantaram is narrated by Lin, an escaped convict with a false passport who flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of a city where he can disappear.

Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, the two enter Bombay’s hidden society of beggars and gangsters, prostitutes and holy men, soldiers and actors, and Indians and exiles from other countries, who seek in this remarkable place what they cannot find elsewhere.

As a hunted man without a home, family, or identity, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city’s poorest slums, and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The search leads him to war, prison torture, murder, and a series of enigmatic and bloody betrayals. The keys to unlock the mysteries and intrigues that bind Lin are held by two people. The first is Khader Khan: mafia godfather, criminal-philosopher-saint, and mentor to Lin in the underworld of the Golden City. The second is Karla: elusive, dangerous, and beautiful, whose passions are driven by secrets that torment her and yet give her a terrible power.

Burning slums and five-star hotels, romantic love and prison agonies, criminal wars and Bollywood films, spiritual gurus and mujaheddin guerrillas—this huge novel has the world of human experience in its reach, and a passionate love for India at its heart. Based on the life of the author, it is by any measure the debut of an extraordinary voice in literature.

Beta News: Apple removes ‘Siri Remote’ mentions in tvOS 14.5, changes ‘Home Button’ term

Apple today released the tvOS 14.5 beta 5. Changes in the update found by MacRumors contributor Steve Moser include all mentions of the “Siri Remote” being removed and replaced with “Apple TV Remote.”Apple also changes the name of the “Home Button” to the “TV Button” (since that’s what those of us who’ve long ago mapped that button to the Apple TV app call it anyway).

The ‌Siri‌ Remote has always been the ‌Apple TV‌ Remote in countries where ‌Siri‌ functionality is not available on the ‌Apple TV‌, but now Apple is using the ‌Apple TV‌ Remote wording in countries where the remote was previously referred to as the ‌Siri‌ Remote.

Apple is rumored to be working on a new version of the ‌Apple TV‌ that’s set to come out this year, and it will be accompanied by a refreshed remote control with Find My capabilities. Little else is known about the remote at this time.

tvOS 14.5 also renames the “Home Button” under the “Remotes and Devices” section to “TV Button,” but the functionality is ultimately the same and can be set to go to the ‌Apple TV‌ app or the Home Screen.

Intel wants to manufacture Apple Silicon Chips

Intel will soon be cut out of Apple's processor supply chain as the tech giant moves to in-house silicon designs for Mac, but the chipmaker is looking to claw its way back in as a third-party manufacturer.

Intel on Tuesday announced it will invest some $20 billion to build a pair of chip fabs in Ocotillo, Arizona, with plans to dedicate at least a portion of the output to a new foundry subsidiary, reports CNBC.

Called Intel Foundry Services, Intel's new chip manufacturing arm will produce the silicon based on the company's favored x86 architecture, as well as ARM designs like those used in Apple's A- and M-series SoCs. Intel senior vice president Randhir Thakur is in charge of the operation.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger told press that IFS will be run as its own unit and is currently working with Amazon, Cisco, IBM and Microsoft on the initiative, according to Engadget. The company is also looking to gain Apple's interest.

Apple has long relied on one firm, TSMC, to build its modern chip designs. With foundries in the U.S. and abroad, the Taiwan-based company has both the capacity and cutting-edge fabrication technology necessary to handle Apple's exacting demands. Whether Intel can compete with TSMC's market lead is unknown.
