Foxconn’ Wisconsin factory still sets empty

Foxconn originally promised to turn two buildings in Eau Claire into office space and research facilities. It never purchased one of the buildings and has taken out no substantive building permits for the other… The Green Bay innovation center has also made no progress.

The main Foxconn project — the factory in Mount Pleasant — appears to be moving forward, albeit at a much smaller scale than the massive Generation 10.5 LCD fabrication plant originally promised and specified in the company’s contract with the state.

Earlier this month, the company submitted a project report to the state claiming it now employs more than 550 people, enough to qualify for lucrative subsidies. (Most were hired at the end of last year.) And although no LCD fabrication equipment has been reported as arriving at the factory, Foxconn has announced a giant glass dome that will house a data center, along with deals to make robotic coffee kiosks and alarm system components in what’s been described as a “high-mix, low-to-medium volume” manufacturing strategy. And last week, Foxconn and Medtronic announced plans to build ventilators at the factory within four to six weeks…

The factory is set to open in May. Foxconn has deemed construction “essential,” and work continues even under Wisconsin’s stay-at-home order.

Apple Maps simplifies submission of COVID-19 testing sites

Apple is adding the ability to find local testing sites for COVID-19.

The company is currently simplifying the way medical establishments can add their testing site to Apple Maps.

Launched on Saturday, the Apple Business Register site for Apple Maps' dedicated COVID-19 listingsprovides a way for healthcare providers, laboratories, and other businesses to submit information about testing locations. Once submitted, the coronavirus test site will be added to Apple Maps, where it will be searchable and allow users to navigate to the location just like other businesses.

The register page advises firms to download and fill out a CSV template, listing the location and related information. The data required in the template includes the provider name, where they are located, contact details, a COVID-19 Specific URL, a status, a category for the location, testing hours, if they require referrals or appointment, if they offer COVID-19 testing, and the type of testing location it is.

Once filled in, the form is to be sent to Apple from a business email address, then it will be reviewed by Apple's team. It is unclear how long it will take for listings to appear once submitted, but Apple reserves the right to contact the submitter for further queries.

Approved listings are added to Apple Maps with a red medical logo, and will show a card providing more information about it as a COVID-19 Testing Site.

The opening of the page follows an announcement on Friday where Apple and Google revealed they were working together on a COVID-19 'contact tracing' system, one which could help reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

Rant: No, Apple is not taking pre-orders for the new Smart Keyboard with Trackpad for iPad Pro

Over the last few months, I’ve found myself using my iPad Pro more than usual. It’s just more convenient and scaled down to a point where I can use it on a daily basis.

So when I saw that a new Smart Keyboard was coming out, I would finally bite the bullet and get one. Much to my surprise, I found out that Apple is NOT taking pre-orders for the device, nor is any of the chat reps would let me know.

Moral to the story?  If you’re interested in picking one up, you’ll have to wait and see when Apple will release it on that day.
