Disney Skyliner goes off-line after “accident”

On Sunday in Walt Disney World, there was an accidental collision at one of the Disney Skyliner stations, causing the Epcot line to close. Reedy Creek Fire Department evacuated guests on that line via lifts. In this post, we’ll look at what happened and our commentary about the future impact of this incident on the Disney Skyliner’s operations.

Sometime between 8 and 9 pm, at the Riviera/Caribbean Beach Skyliner station, the aqua-colored gondola cabin did not attach to the cable to dispatch from the station en route to Epcot (see top image via @Ada58974405 on Twitter). The gondola cabins behind it slowly crashed against it. The crushing of the vehicles caused the glass to shatter on the impacted vehicle and several of the yellow cabins behind it to be damaged.

Consequently, the Epcot line went down for several hours, necessitating an evacuation by Reedy Creek Fire Department. This process was done via lift on a cabin by cabin basis, and reportedly took until after 11 pm to complete. Some guests report being stuck for as long as 3 hours, and the entire Skyliner system remains closed today…

Thankfully, Walt Disney World is reporting that no guests were injured in the accident. (It’s also fortunate that this happened at night, as the lack of air-conditioning definitely would have been an issue had this occurred during the middle of the day yesterday.)

Walt Disney World has informed Orlando-area media outlets that there has not been an accident, but rather “unexpected down time” of the Skyliner. That is quite the disappointing spin, especially with widely-circulated photos on social media reflecting what actually happened.

As compensation, stranded guests are reporting that Walt Disney World Guest Relations provided each of them with a $100 gift card, 2 park tickets, and taxi vouchers. Some guests who were stuck stated in the Disney World Junkies” Facebook group that they applaud how Disney handled the situation.

Many of the guests who saw the crash first-hand or were stranded on the Epcot line of the Skyliner posted photos to social media. Here’s a look at some of those:

How to repair your laptop – A simple do it yourself guide

Just what is it that makes laptop repair today easier than it used to be? One nice thing about most computers today is that just about every component within them, from the hardware to the software, is modular. Most parts can easily be replaced, and this with the very minimum of skill. This system is a big advantage to most computer users, because it means that computer repair has been made very much simpler than it otherwise would be.

In nine cases out of ten, computer repair merely involves locating which part of the computer is malfunctioning, and then replacing that part. In most cases, this is an elementary procedure. It’s just the same with the software. In most cases, malfunctioning software, or even a virus, merely calls for reinstalling the operating system to solve the problem, an operation so simple that even a child can accomplish it. My point is that computer and laptop repair have been greatly simplified, and repairing a laptop is no longer a task solely for professionals.

So long as you have some basic technical skills it is perfectly possible for you to repair your laptop on your own. Of course, the kind of problem that your laptop is experiencing must also influence your decision as to whether to repair the laptop yourself or hand it over to a professional. If you have a hard disk, for example that has suffered a disastrous failure, it would be foolish to fiddle with it yourself. In such a case, it will really be preferable to hand the device over to professionals who would at the very least recover your data.

When there is physical damage to the hard drive, there is absolutely nothing that you can do to repair it and the more that you play around with the damaged hard drive, the higher the level of damage escalates, and the less data that will be ultimately recoverable from it. Minor issues, however, such as replacing a component of the computer that might be malfunctioning, are perfectly within your capabilities. You need to be very careful, though, that you do not void your device’s warranty. If your device is within its warranty period, I would strongly advise you to leave the repair, no matter how simple it might be, to the manufacturer. If on the other hand, your laptop is past its warranty period, you may choose to repair it yourself. If the problem seems to be too complex for you to handle, try to find a laptop repair service in your area whose rates are reasonable.

How to kill virtually any MacOS app from the command line

Most of the time, apps for MacOS work as expected.  But their maybe times when an app doesn't close (or gets stuck exiting) when you use the key combination [Command] + [Q].

When an app gets "stuck", you can use a terminal command to bypass the normal quit command.  However, this option should only be used as a last resort as it could result in damaged or lost data.

Here's how:

  1. Open Terminal (Finder > Applications > Utilities > Terminal).
  2. At the command prompt, type: killall nameofapp
  3. Type EXIT when finished to close the terminal window.
  4. That's it.
