iPhone X: Want to disable Face ID? Read on

“Apple software chief Craig Federighi has revealed that Face ID unlock on the new iPhone X will come with a hidden security feature, allowing users to press buttons on both sides of the phone to temporarily disable the facial recognition capabilities,” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider. “”

“Keith Krimbel emailed Federighi this week, and received a response which he share on Twitter. Krimbel asked what measures Apple was taking to ensure a thief cannot take a user’s iPhone X, point it at their face and then run away with the device unlocked,” Hughes reports. “‘There are two mitigations: if you don’t stare at the phone, it won’t unlock,’ Federighi said. ‘Also, if you grip the buttons on both sides of the phone when you hand it over, it will temporarily disable Face ID.'”

“Other tidbits about Face ID on the iPhone X continue to trickle out, including the fact that the technology will be limited to one face per device at launch,” Hughes reports. “It was also revealed that Apple has been planning for Face ID to replace Touch ID entirely for over a year now, dispelling rumors that the company was trying to embed Touch ID into the iPhone X display as recently as this summer.”

iPhone X: No, Face ID DID NOT Fail during the Keynote (or so says Apple)

For anyone watching Tuesday's keynote, they may have noticed a slight glitch when Craig Federighi tried to demonstrate Face ID (see video below).

In a statement provided to Yahoo's David Pogue, Apple says the device locked after several people interacted with it ahead of Federighi, causing it to require a passcode to unlock.

"Tonight, I was able to contact Apple. After examining the logs of the demo iPhone X, they now know exactly what went down. Turns out my first theory in this story was wrong--but my first UPDATE theory above was correct: "People were handling the device for stage demo ahead of time," says a rep, "and didn't realize Face ID was trying to authenticate their face. After failing a number of times, because they weren't Craig, the iPhone did what it was designed to do, which was to require his passcode." In other words, "Face ID worked as it was designed to."

So, their you have it.

iPhone X: One Face ID per Device

Now that the iPhone X has been out in the wild, various media reports are coming to light.

One such report is saying that with the device's new Face ID feature, that only one face ID can be used per iPhone.  Which means that nobody else can get into the phone except the person with the Face ID.  However, another person could still get into the phone if he/she knows the pass code.

We'll get more information as it becomes available.
