Walt Mossberg: “There’s a good chance Apple will introduce ARM-Based Macs”

“If you became a frequent computer user starting anytime between, say, 1990 and 2007, there’s a good chance that your idea of a PC is a desktop or laptop running a mouse and keyboard-driven graphical user interface,” Walt Mossberg writes for The Verge. But if you got attached to computing in the last 10 years, you very likely find it more natural and comfortable to do your digital tasks on a multi-touch device lacking a keyboard or mouse and running a new, simpler, and cleaner kind of operating system.”

Apple CEO Cook: “Macs DO MORE than iPads”

“Apple hasn’t updated some of its Macs in three years, and this has got Apple’s professional users worried – but Apple CEO, Tom Cook, took a few moments to promise bread and circuses during last night’s shareholder’s meeting,” Jonny Evans writes for Computerworld. “‘You will see us do more in the pro area,’ Cook promised. ‘The pro area is very important to us. The creative area is very important to us in particular.'”

“The Apple leader’s statements may be understood as a cool glass of water in the desert for many creative pros,” Evans writes. “There is little doubt, at least when it comes to Apple desktops, that the Mac Pro market has been poorly served.”

“In further statements, Cook suggested some philosophical change within company management,” Evans writes. “When asked if Apple has plans to merge Macs and iPads in some way, he said: ‘Expect us to do more and more where people will view it as a laptop replacement, but not a Mac replacement – the Mac does so much more… To merge these worlds, you would lose the simplicity of one, and the power of the other… Don’t think something we’ve done or something that we’re doing that isn’t visible yet is a signal that our priorities are elsewhere.’

81-Year-Old Japanese Women makes first iPhone App

“If you laugh at how older people use computers, this 81-year-old from Japan is going to set you straight,” Yi Shu Ng reports for Mashable. “Masako Wakamiya is making the news for an app she created to show people the correct way to place their traditional doll displays ahead of Hinamatsuri, or Girl’s Day, in Japan.”

“Wakamiya is a former banker who clocked 43 years of service at a major Japanese bank, and only learned how to use computers when she was 60,” Ng reports.

“In the app, named Hinadan — a combination of the words hina, a type of doll, and dan, meaning ‘tier’ — the player must position 12 dolls in their correct positions on a display with four tiers,” Ng reports.
