Apple’s Phil Schiller: Apple working with Consumer Reports to understand Bad Report

On Friday, the world's leading consumer magazine, Consumer Reports, had put out a "No Buy" report on Apple's new MacBook Pro due to battery issues.

Hours later, Apple's Senior Vice President, Phil Schiller, issued a Tweet that said:

The Consumer Reports test has come under scrutiny since publication of the non-recommendation. The tests were conducted by opening a series of 10 web pages sequentially on Safari. This tests' inconsistency had the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar registering 16 hours, 12.75 hours and 3.75 hours of battery life. A 15-inch MacBook Pro ranged from 18.5 hours to 8 hours of battery life.

When Consumer Reports tried the test with Chrome rather than Safari, it found consistently high battery life. "For this exercise, we ran two trials on each of the laptops, and found battery life to be consistently high on all six runs," the report said. Consumer Reports did not think it was enough data to draw a conclusion, though they also point out their test results only take default browsers into consideration.

Critics, like iMore's Rene Ritchie, argue that inconsistent test results require more testing to ferret out whether the issue is easily fixable, like a Safari glitch. Consumer Reports noted in its report that if Apple issues a software update that it claims will fix battery life inconsistency, they will conduct fresh tests.

How to Capitalize Words and Put Period in Automatically on Mac OS Sierra

If you do as much writing as I do on your Mac, you look for any shortcuts or apps to help you get the job done just a little faster.

Fortunately, starting with MacOS Sierra, Apple has added the ability to make the computer automatically put capital letters at the beginning of sentences and put a period when someone double taps the space bar.

Here's how to enable it (example photo at end of article):

  1. Select  > System Preferences > Text.
  2. Over on the right, you'll have four options: "Correct Spelling Automatically", "Capitalize Words Automatically", "Add Period with double-space".
  3. Put a check mark next to the option(s) that you wish the computer does for you while you're writing.

You can also use the option on the left side to add shortcuts for Emojis or just about anything else you can think of.

Amazon and Google offering 99 cent Movie Rentals for the Holidays

The retailers have unveiled promotions that allow users to rent movies for as low as 99 cents.

The offer is redeemable on Amazon using a promotional code -- "MOVIE99."

Google, meanwhile, requires a less catchy code, but a budget-friendly rental can also be purchased via this link.

Amazon has about 49,000 titles available through the deal, including recent releases, like "Suicide Squad" and "Magnificent Seven," and some holiday classics like "Die Hard".

Amazon's promotion runs through January 23, 2017.

Both retailers are allowing one use of the deal per account.

The roll-out of the offers coincides with the start of the Christmas holiday weekend.
