iTunes Connect to go offline for 'maintenance'

iTunes Connect is officially scheduled to undergo maintenance today between 9AM and 4PM Pacific time, developers reveal. The service represents the backend of iTunes, the means by which people submit audio, video and applications. Apple is cautioning app developers to avoid making pricing changes during the downtime, since that will cause an app to disappear from sale until the maintenance is over. At that point an app should return with its new pricetag.

Google revamps Android Marketplace

Source: CNN.COM/tech

(WIRED– Look out, iTunes, the Android Market is getting a face-lift.

Google launched an entirely new user interface for its mobile platform Tuesday, completely changing the layout of the application portal.

“The new Market client is designed to better showcase top apps and games, engage users with an improved UI, and provide a quicker path to downloading or purchasing your products,” wrote Android developer Eric Chu in a blog post.

Navigating the differing app categories on the phone-based market requires a swipe left or right, which switches to new, tile-based menu screens. The name and price of a given app you’ve chosen moves to the top of the screen.

In addition to apps and games, you’ll also be able to browse movies and books available for purchase from the Market.

Android has long faced platform criticism for its Market setup, as both users and developers alike have had difficulty finding the programs they want in the 200,000+ app-packed Android Market.

Apple, by contrast, has long promoted featured and popular apps in its iTunes-based App Store, a one-stop shop for all things iOS.

But Google is trying to counter the complaints: At its I/O developer conference in May, Google rolled out a streamlined, app-promoting look for the Market’s web store, with the inclusion of categories like “Top Grossing, Trending” and other ‘top’ apps.

HP announces Touchpad 4G

Have you been holding out on that new HP TouchPad, with the feeling that something new might be just around the bend? Well, here’s what you’ve been holding for: the TouchPad4G on AT&T’s HSPA+ network.

Officially branded as the HP TouchPad 4G this morning, the new TouchPad will be available at an undisclosed price at an undisclosed date sometime in the future on AT&T’s network. The webOS tablet will come with 32GB of storage (no mention of 16GB or 64GB) and a faster 1.5GHz processor (presumably an uprated version of the 1.2GHz Qualcomm APQ8060 currently found in the TouchPad).

As mentioned, pricing and release date aren’t yet available, but we expect (with no evidence, just intuition) that the price to fall right in line with the iPad 2, so right at or around $729.00. Availability was announced back in early June as “later this summer” and the latest leaked roadmap was looking at next month for a release.

Pandora drops Flash for HTML 5

Source: MacNN.com

Pandora on Tuesday unveiled a redesign of its website built around escaping the limitations of Flash. The new page is built entirely on HTML5 and takes advantage of dropping Adobe's plugin to improve its speed and interface. Stations now load in about a third of the time, and there's now a persistent music playback bar borrowed from the iPad app that lets listeners explore artists or other parts of the site without interrupting play.
